The first time I met Dylan was at the Bennett Track & Field camp right before freshman year. Coming from a different school than the rest of the campers, I was nervous that I would not make any friends; nonetheless, Dylan was the first to introduce himself to me and include me in conversation with fellow campers. His friendliness helped me realize that if the rest of the incoming freshman at CBA were as welcoming as Dylan, then I made the right choice to attend CBA. For the next three years, we shared the same homeroom and sat next to each other in junior year religion class. He always lent a helping hand if needed, and his humor brightened the dull moments. He was a model student-athlete and one of the first friends I made at CBA. Unfortunately I could not say my final goodbyes as I was out of the state; however, my thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. I will truly miss him.

I agree I agree with Dylan's teacher's comment. I too witnessed the many gifts of this sensitive and caring young man! Dylan volunteered many times, with his friends from CBA, at the Schroth School in Wanamassa. I watched him work with our special population of children, who experience profound physical challenges, on a daily basis. Unlike many others who walk into our facility, Dylan was able to come in, make our children feel special, and above all, he was kind, compassionate, and saw NO DIFFERENCES!! My congratulations to Dylan's parents, for raising this extraordinary individual; you obviously taught him what is important in life! My prayers are with all of the Vassallo family. I can imagine what you are going through, as we lost our nephew, my sister's son Kristopher, five years ago. Mere weeks ago, in mid-July, I was privileged to accompany an extraordinary group of approximately 40 high school students and recent high school graduates on an eight day adventure to build schools and housing for orphaned and impoverished children of Honduras. Dylan and his inseparable comrade, Matt, shared a dorm and bunks with me and with Dennis Mojares, the other adult chaperone for the Monmouth County kids, and four other young men.

We and all the other young ladies and men worked hard together in the hot sun, beginning on the Sunday that we arrived and straight through the week, alongside local workers that we learned from and admired as much for their playful spirits as for their incredible strength and stamina. After each workday, we joined alongside the local villagers and their children, making friends, marveling in the smiles of the children despite their circumstances, and competing in numerous friendly but well-battled soccer matches. In the evenings, we engaged in thoughtful ‘circle talks’ to consider and debate possible solutions, to help these kind people and their defenseless children meet the unimaginable everyday challenges. And after that, Dylan and his many new friends 'were just kids' - - playing board games, sharing laughs and practical jokes, talking, flirting and making memories until well past Midnight almost every night.

During our closing remarks in the Hostel the morning before we all traveled, both Dennis and I were unable to control our emotions because we were so moved by the astonishing maturity, energy, love and compassion of each and every one of the remarkable and selfless young men and ladies that had worked so hard, suffered so much and made such a difference to so many of the Honduran children and families that they touched that week.

And it was Dylan, yes, our roomie Dylan, who first approached us afterward, as would a shy 12 year old with an ‘aw shucks’ shuffle, but with his huge smile beaming, to tell us both “you know, I just gotta hug you two.”

It was at that moment, with his defenses down and all surface flaws cast aside, flaws that each and every one of us have and hide, that I observed the tenderness and vulnerability within his soul. It pierced my heart then, and tears it apart now.

Those were the last words we exchanged.

Thank you, Dylan, for living your last weeks in service of others.
