Winifred F. “Winnie” Matthews, 95, passed away peacefully in Eatontown on Sunday, February 25.
She was born to the late David J. and Louise (Cartmel) Brower in Bronx, New York in 1922. After being raised in Keansburg and starting her family she later moved to Shrewsbury, then W. Long Branch, and finally, Eatontown.
Winnie worked for Bendix in Eatontown, and then for the Borough of Shrewsbury, where she retired from after 16 years of service as an Assistant tax collector. She was a communicant of St. James in Red Bank, a member of Little Silver Woman’s Club, as well as the Shrewsbury Senior Homesteaders.
Winnie is predeceased by her husband, Cornelius H. Matthews, her son, Neil Matthews, and her brother, David J. Brower.
Surviving is her daughter, Patricia Verrone, her daughters-in-law, Maureen Matthews of Lavallette, and Sally Maloney of Lakewood, her eight Grandchildren: William J. Nutley of Freehold; Robert Nutley and his wife Ashley of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Dianne Karcanes and her husband Lou of Glen Rock; Edward J. Matthews, of Lakewood; Thomas J.Matthews of Eatontown; Ann Marie Matthews of Tinton Falls; Alexis L. Matthews-Lehmann of Fishersville, VA; and Emily W. Matthews of Lavallette. Winnie is also survived by her 12 loving Great-Grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 1ST at John E. Day Funeral Home from 10am-12pm, Red Bank, with a Funeral Home Service at 12pm. Burial at will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
