Tribute

Ruth Lange Cooney, age 92, of Shrewsbury, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 18,2022 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, NJ. A lifelong resident of Shrewsbury, NJ, Ruth was a graduate of Red Bank High School in Red Bank, NJ where she loved being a majorette.

Ruth married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Alfred “Buddy” Cooney of Middletown, NJ, and celebrated 58 years of marriage until Buddy’s passing in December 2006. Ruth loved to entertain and was an outstanding cook. Family and friends gathered regularly at Ruth and Buddy’s house, especially for their annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

Ruth devoted her life to her family and her beloved Shrewsbury. She was a lifetime member and past president of the Shrewsbury Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary, having served for more than 50 years. Her contributions were many, including keeping the firemen well fed after their fire calls, as well as making sure deceased members of the SHC were honored by placing plaques and American flags on their graves each Memorial Day. Ruth’s favorite duty was helping Santa get ready to meet the children at the firehouse each year for the annual holiday party.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Alfred “Buddy” Cooney; her parents, George and Nellie (Rephart) Lange; four sisters, Marie Sagurton, Margaret Norris, Helen “Billie” Willis and Evelyn Tryens; and brother, George Lange Jr. Surviving are her three daughters, Joan Teller and her husband David of Hershey, PA, Kathleen Marone and her husband David of Shrewsbury Township, NJ, and Patricia Aber and her husband, Thomas of Point Pleasant, NJ; two grandchildren, Diana Teller Cooney and her husband Shaun and Lauren Aber; one great grandchild, Reilly Cooney; sister in-law Dorothy Kennedy and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.

Ruth was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Red Bank, NJ. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a future date when it is safe for a gathering to occur. A private interment for immediate family will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Middletown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth’s name to The Ryan Blaney Family Foundation to help Alzheimer’s patients is appreciated.
