Robert Edward Nahory, age 85, passed away on Saturday, November 4th at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, NJ. He was born in McKeesport, PA on March 1, 1938, attended McKeesport H.S. and graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1956. He then attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA and received a B.S. degree in Physics in 1960. He attended graduate school at Purdue University in W. Lafayette, IN and received a PhD in Physics in 1966. He was then employed by Bell Laboratories (Holmdel, NJ) and Bell Communications Research ("Bellcore", Red Bank, NJ) and conducted research in solid state physics, including that which made possible the lasers now used worldwide for fiber optic communications systems.
While at Bellcore he became involved in long-distance learning and connected students in NJ to different areas of the nation and the world. A connection with Rutgers University was developed through the long distance learning program and he then began teaching physics at Rutgers University. Eventually he also served as technical advisor in his position as Digital Applications Developer to the Institute of Jazz Studies located on the Newark Campus of Rutgers University. He was a member of the American Physical Society, and enjoyed many meaningful relationships in those many years.
He was a member of the Lincroft Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, and served in many leadership capacities within his life-long commitment to his church, including being a member of the session, leading youth group activities, and guiding contemporary worship services. He retired in 2017 and enjoyed music, photography, baseball and reading, all of which fueled his unending quest for the meaning of life.
He is survived by his wife Dawn of 63 years, children Jill Dames and husband Tom, Doug and Bobby, grandchildren Brenna, Brendan and Levi, his sister Eileen Hawkins and husband Allen and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Alan.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 17 at the Lincroft Presbyterian Church in Lincroft, NJ at 11am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association at https://diabetes.org.
