I don't know what to say....I saw Evarts three weeks before he passed away. I was visiting from China where I work at this time and I stopped by his office to see him. I have worked with Dr. Evarts for nine years at Monmouth University and he was one of the best colleagues I have ever had. I am Greek and he loved Greek literature.

I miss you so much already...and I can't believe Monmouth University doesn't have you anymore...Thank you for all the help you have given me through out the years and for that last good-bye hug at the beginning of August...

Professor Evarts was my teacher and faculty advisor in '79 & '80. Here's my favorite memory: I wrote a really long paper using Mary Shelly, the Bronte sisters, and I can't remember what else. I had to meet with Professor Evarts to go over it because he had some issues with it.

When I sat down in his office, he quickly scanned the paper again and then, in that soft gentle voice, he said, "Usually when I look for a thesis statement, I look on the first page. Then I look at the last page. Under special circumstances I look on the 2nd page. I'm not having much luck finding it on those 3 pages." Then he looked at me again and asked, "If one were going to find a thesis in this paper, where would one look?" I said right here and pointed to a mess on the third page. He read it, took a long breath and patiently told me "That can't happen. Go back to what works." I know it doesn't sound like much, but it was the way he spoke to me and helped me become a better writer.

Today, I am a writing instructor at BCC and say the same things to my students. He was a great teacher and mentor.

Many blessings to those he left behind.

Prescott was my dear colleague and friends through my many years at Monmouth. I learned so much from him in our many conversations about Classical texts, teaching and life. He was a mentor and support to me always. A brilliant man, but always humble and ready to laugh and joke. I will miss him very much. My deepest sympathy to Janine and family. He loved his grandchildren so much.

"For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils. "

I wouldn't have an appreciation for Wordsworth if it wasn't for Dr. Evarts. One of my favorite professors at Monmouth.

A classmate at St. Paul's School, early 1950s.
A truly decent, kind classmate, well ahead of the majority of us spoilt
unappreciative confused brats. He was a leader in our class and continued
to join us in successive periodic reunions much appreciated. He was steady,
quiet, comforting, highly uncomfortable with mean spirited behavior towards
lesser members of the class.
God bless Pete, you lived a worthy and complete life with your wonderful lady,
Harald Paumgarten

Prescott was a lover of community. He was in many ways the soul of the community of learners known as Monmouth University. He often stopped by my office on his way home to chat, tell me of something he learned or to ask a question. He supported the intellectual endeavour of the university in so many ways. He and Janine always attended the visiting writers series and dinner. Drawing on his study of Greek and English literature and his sharp intellect, his was always the most articulate, accessible and probing question of the writer. He understood poetry as the soul of a university and exemplified this every day through his many academic seasons.

Wonderful person, delightful sense of humor, incredibly intelligent & witty & passionate about his work...he was my first college level English professor and then my colleague for 10 years...I am heartbroken over his loss and wish to express my deepest condolences to his close friends & family and peace of heart & mind during this very difficult time. Dr. Evarts, you certainly made an impact. You will be missed & forever associated with my greatest Monmouth memories.

Mourning the loss of my colleague, Dr. Evarts, who often pulled me out of my shell to talk about running and local history. I will miss him.

I had Professor Evarts as my American Literature professor approximately 30 years ago. He was an amazing enthusiast of the genres and lit a fire to learn in me.that truly was a turning point in my life. I am so grateful that he cared about my learning and four years later when I received an academic award at the seniors ceremony, he remembered me and came up to congratulate me. Dr. Evarts embodied everything a college professor should be and was obviously a wonderful person. May his family know that he was a one of a kind professor and a true inspiration.

He was an inspiration to this young college student who never dreamed of hearing a lecture on poetry in the idyllic setting of Wilson Hall. I was an English teacher of 40 years because of Dr. Evarts. Deepest sympathy to his family

We were so fortunate to have spent such fun times with Pete during the heyday of the cross country league as a GPH. He will forever be in our memories, the world is poorer with the lost of such a great person. Love to the family.

My sincere condolences on the loss of Dr. Evarts. He was my favorite--and most challenging--English professor. It was a pleasure and an honor to have been taught by him.

I will forever remember Professor Evarts for his caring support of the students at Monmouth. One of his students told me once that "he makes literature come alive". He will be deeply missed!
