Paul Francis Dowd

August 27, 1930 ~ September 17, 2022 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Tribute

Paul Dowd, 92, longtime resident of Holmdel, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 17, 2022 in Surfside Beach, SC with his family by his side.
Born in Manhattan, Paul grew up during the Great Depression in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Keansburg, where he was a graduate of Middletown High School. After graduation, he started working for the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York until he was drafted into the Army and stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
Paul returned to Morgan—where he worked for 40 years—and went to night school at Pace University on the GI Bill, earning a degree in accounting. Highlights of his long career in the tax department included handling the accounts for the Morgan Family, the renowned Watson Family of IBM, and Juan Trippe, the founder of Pan Am Airlines.
It was at Morgan that he met the love of his life, Mary Mungovan of Brooklyn. They married in 1966 and remained so until Mary’s passing in 2019. Paul passed away on what would have been their 56th anniversary. After the birth of their oldest son Michael, the couple moved to Holmdel in 1968, where he coached his sons in HYAA baseball, was a devout parishioner of St. Catherine’s, and a regular at the Holmdel Public Library.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed vigorous walks, being engrossed in a new book, and watching his beloved Mets. With ready wit and a congenial nature, Paul had many dear friends, especially from his Morgan days and teen years in Keansburg—where he was a member of the local Panthers baseball and football sandlot teams. Above all, he loved spending time with his family of four sons and five grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Mary, he is predeceased by his father Martin, mother, Alice, sister Patricia, and brother Martin. He is survived by his brother Edward, Goffstown, NH and sister, Joan, Cape Coral, FL.
He leaves behind great memories for his son Michael and wife, Debera, Surfside Beach, SC; son Brian and wife, Melissa, Kent, WA; son Paul and wife Allison, Middletown, NJ; and son, Patrick, Charleston, SC; as well as grandchildren, Keira, Hannah, Patrick, Maximillian, and Van.
Visitation will be held on Sun., Sept., 25th from 2-5pm at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank.
