Mercedita B. Maglaya, age 79, of Tinton Falls, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, December 28th 2021. Born in the Philippines, she was eldest daughter of 11 children to parents Alfonso and Angelina Fama Borja. She was the first to immigrate to the United States and start planting family roots when she met and married Philomel. Merceditas was a medical technician at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ Hospital in Newark. She was a devoted communicant of St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church in Lincroft. In retirement, she enjoyed shopping but, above all, she loved hosting family parties and spending time with family and friends.
Mercedita was predeceased by her parents and by her two sisters, Theresa Cruz and Nannette Brown. She is survived by her loving, good husband Philomel Maglaya of 51 years, and cherished by her son, Eric (Elaine) Maglaya, and by her daughter Melissa (Michael) Fernandes; also by her beloved seven grand-children, Alyssa, Ayden, Mia, Ava, Mia, Mikey and Ethan who brought her much joy, love and fufilment.
Merceditas was a fierce, strong woman. Despite her ailing chronic illness, she held fast to her beliefs and was loving and generous to her family
Visitation will take place on Sunday, January 2nd 2022, between 2:00 and 6:00 PM, at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, New Jersey. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 3rd, at 10:15 AM, at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church in Lincroft, New Jersey. Entombment will immediately follow at Woodbine Cemetery in Oceanport, New Jersey.
