Sister Mary Elizabeth Stewart, 70, of Red Bank, New Jersey, died on February 27, 2018 at CareOne at Holmdel in Holmdel, NJ. She was born on August 29, 1947 in Rochester, New York to Harold and Philomena (Hendron) Stewart. She is survived by a brother James of Madison, Wisconsin; nephew Ian Stewart (deceased), niece Sarah (Stewart) Fleming, Sarah’s husband Drew and their children Maxine, Charlotte and Julian. In addition, Mary is survived by many cousins, all who live in New York State.

Mary grew up in the salt mining town of Retsof, New York where she enjoys sports of all kinds—Title XI came to late for Mary to showcase her athletic abilities while in high school. In addition, Mary was an active member of St. Lucy’s Roman Catholic Church in Retsof, New York. She graduated from York Central High school in 1965 and continued her education at the Rochester Business College where she graduated in 1967. Following graduation Mary worked at the Livingston County, County Home.

Mary’s life trajectory took a turn when, October 1 of 1976 when she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Atonement, St. Francis Convent—Graymoor, Garrison, New York. As a member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement Mary professed her first vows on May 26, 1979 and then professed her final vows on August 8, 1987.  While a Franciscan Sister Mary received her BS degree and then her Masters in Theology in 1987, from the Oblate College in Washington, DC. 

As an Atonement missionary for 39 years, Sister Mary served in parish, catechetical, pastoral, and retreat ministries in Amsterdam, New York, St Cecilia’s in New York City; at Cabrini Home in Dobbs Ferry, Arms Acres in Carmel, and at St. Christopher’s Inns, Garrison. Her retreat ministries were at Our Lady of the Atonement Retreat House, Graymoor and in New Jersey where she lived since 1993. One of Mary‘s favorite activities was attending spiritual retreats at Emmaus house in Ocean Grove, New Jersey.

Mary was a faithful friend of Bill for over 30 years.  She gave and got great support and comfort within the recovery community and provided love and encouragement to those in need.

Memorial service will be held from 1:00PM to 4:30PM on Saturday the 30th of June, 2018 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ 07701. All are welcome.
