John F. Flanagan, 86, of Holmdel and formerly of Middletown, N.J. passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday February 20, 2020 in Red Bank. He was born to the late John and Mildred Flanagan in N.Y.C. John proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After his service, John went on to earn his Bachelor Degree from CCNY, in 1963. It was also during this time that he'd meet his future bride. He then began a dedicated career as a Systems Analyst, initially working for Chase Manhattan Bank, Dean Witter Reynolds, and SIAC all in NYC, from where he retired, in 1991.
John was an active member of St. Mary’s, Mary, Mother of God Roman Catholic Church and of the Knights of Columbus (3rd Degree, since 1957) - Vincent T. Lombardi 6552 of Middletown. He volunteered with the Middletown Youth Athletic Association, as the Commissioner of Basketball, as well as other roles, enjoyed gardening (a wonderful green thumb), playing golf, helping others and most of all, spending quality time with his family and friends.
John is predeceased by his brother, William and his sister, Alice.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Cassandra (nee Contardi); and his children, William Devine, and his wife, Cheryl, Jan Patrice Flanagan, and Stephen Flanagan, and his wife, Lorrie Ann, two grandchildren, Dean Patrick and Elodie Rose Flanagan, and several nieces, nephews, and grand- nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation on Sunday February 23, 2020 from 4-8 PM at the John E. Day Funeral Home 85 Riverside Ave. Red Bank, N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 24, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Mary, Mother of God Church in Middletown. Interment will be private.
