Jean W. Klem
May 2, 1940 ~ January 31, 2024 (age 83) 83 Years Old
Jean W. Klem 83 of Oceanport, NJ passed away peacefully in her longtime home on January 31, 2024. Jean was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 2,1940 to Lucille (Betty) and Stephen Welsh. The daughter of a career Army officer, she lived in many places including New York, Virginia, Germany and finally Monmouth County, NJ. She graduated from The College of St. Joseph’s in Maryland and earned her Masters in Math Education from Rutgers University.
Jean married James (Jim) Klem in 1964, and together they raised four children, were proud grandparents to nine grandchildren and have many nieces, nephews and cousins. She had a long career as math teacher, starting at Thorne Middle School in 1963 where she met the handsome physical education teacher who would become the love of her life, and retiring from Middletown HS North in 2008. A beloved teacher she was known for making math class fun, supporting her fellow teachers, and leading the High School Chess team to numerous tournament victories.
Jean was an avid reader, bridge and chess player and could hold her own at a poker table. She was happy to teach anyone interested how to play Mahjong and loved to bring people together for a game. Jean was a warm hostess who made everyone feel relaxed and at home, and she always had time for a cup of tea and a chat. She loved hosting picnics on Horseneck Point and spending time with her teacher friends, her neighbors at Warwick gardens and most of all her family. She was an active member of St Anthony’s Church in Red Bank until dementia slowed her down, and always the educator she enjoyed teaching CCD. She travelled with Jim extensively in their retirement, visiting family and friends across the country. She loved the annual camping trip with grandkids to Frost Valley YMCA camp and the sunny beaches of St. John.
Jean was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother and a fierce and loyal friend. Funny, kind and unabashedly herself, she embraced life and welcomed all into the fold. She never stopped smiling, right to the end.
She is survived by husband Jim, daughter Marie and husband Darrell of Atlantic Highlands, daughter Elizabeth and husband Emmet of Bronxville NY, son Jim and wife Caity of Huntington Beach Ca, son Steve and wife Gina of Seattle, Wa, beloved grandchildren William, James, Lucy, Declan, Fiona, Jilyn, Jaxon, Sam, Anna, daughter-in-law Karlyn and brother Steve Welsh.
