Jean Cooman Green passed peacefully in her sleep on September 12, 2023, after a short illness. Her 98th Birthday would have been November 9th. Jean was born in Summit, NJ in 1925 to Earl and Marie Cooman. She was surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins who all lived in her neighborhood in Summit. After Summit High School, Jean attended Overlook Hospital School of Nursing, also in Summit. While a student nurse, she met her husband-to-be, Wally, a patient at Overlook. They married in 1946, after Wally returned from Coast Guard service during WWII. They had a son Donald in 1947, a daughter Linda in 1949 and a son Paul in 1959. Jean and Wally lived in Summit until 1985 when they moved and became full-time residents in Normandy Beach, NJ.
Although Jean loved her work as a nurse at Overlook Hospital, especially when heading up the emergency room, she kept busy in retirement. She volunteered at Brick Hospital and then became actively involved in the Normandy Beach Association where she served as President for many years. Jean worked part-time at Macy’s and then spent 10 years at Bonton Department store in Brick. She also was a member of the Normandy Beach Garden Club. Jean often babysat for her seven grandchildren. All of them enjoyed visiting Jean and Wally in Summit and especially at their Normandy Beach beachhouse. Jean was also known to tend to her neighbor’s medical needs and the neighbors were very good to her as well.
Jean was pre-deceased by her parents, her older brother Gerald and her sons Donald and Paul. She is survived by her daughter Linda Wright and husband Richard, daughter-in-law Mary and her grandchildren: Bryan (Stephanie), Stephen (Halsey), Matthew (Brianna), Sean (Reagan), Bridget, Kerry (James), Megan (Mitch) and five very cute great-grandchildren.
