James H Phillips

February 8, 1929 ~ October 26, 2021 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Tribute

James H. Phillips, 92, passed away peacefully at home on Oct 26, 2021. Jim was born in Hogansville, GA to Clifford and Fletcher Phillips. He graduated from Auburn University where he studied aeronautical engineering followed by serving in the US Airforce. Shortly after beginning a career in management, he went on to pursue his MBA at Harvard University, graduating in 1955.
After several successful years in leadership at US Rubber, New York, he made a move to Wall St. Trading for himself, Jim became a successful Commodities Trader as a member of the New York Cotton Exchange and later the Intercontinental Exchange. Wearing badge #134 for almost 35 years, he was at one point the oldest exchange member actively trading on the floor.
He was a dedicated, loving husband and father who always put his family first. Despite a challenging career, he always ensured there was time to spend with his wife and children. Thanks to his love of travel and learning, he traveled the world with his family, visiting dozens of countries across 5 continents. A true nature-lover, he was an enthusiastic bird-watcher and had a tremendous love of animals, especially his beloved dogs, Nikka and Rusty.
Jim was known for his kindness, generosity and genuine smile. Though he moved “up north” in his twenties, his soft Georgia accent always remained as an embodiment of his true character, a “southern gentleman”.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Cristina and their two children; daughter Andrea in Edgewater; son Clifford and wife Lisa, four grandsons Jordan, Max, Alec and Ben and great-grand-daughter Chloe in Rumson. He also leaves behind his much loved nieces Tillie Carter in Atlanta, GA, Anne Sassaman in Chapel Hill, NC and nephew Jody Phillips in Opelika, AL.
The family would like to extend thanks to the compassionate care-givers who cared for him in his final months; Anita, Sophia, Ariadna and Timon as well as his hospice team Ann, Charles and Beth.
A private memorial gathering will be held by the family at a later date.
