Tribute

Dr. Jaime Portela, 89, of Red Bank, passed away on February 4, 2021, at Riverview Medical Center. He was born in Navarrete, Dominican Republic, to the late Jose and Anayda (Bueno) Portela. Jaime was a Doctor of Medicine, graduating from the University of Santo Domingo.

After immigrating to the United States and during his early years as a resident, he met the love of his life, Theresa, with whom he would share 60 years of marriage. They moved to Bayonne, NJ, where he established his own medical practice. He was deeply devoted to his patients and was well respected within the community. He served many years on the Board of Directors of the former Pamrapo Bank and he was dedicated to his service at Bayonne Hospital.

Together they lived and raised their family in Bayonne. Later in life they enjoyed their retirement together in Aventura, Florida, before relocating to Red Bank.

Jaime enjoyed travelling with his wife and making memories with his family and friends. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed getting out on the course and enjoyed the camaraderie of his golfing buddies. He enjoyed dining out almost as much as he enjoyed Theresa’s cooking, had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh and tell stories.

Above all else, Jaime was a devoted Husband, Father and Grandfather. In particular, he adored his grandchildren and they cherished him in return. He brought joy to his many nieces and nephews in the Dominican Republic and in the United States. They loved him dearly. He had an endearing personality and made friends easily and was well loved among his colleagues, his patients, his new found friends in Aventura and at the Atrium in Red Bank. He will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Theresa, his son, Gerard, his son in law, Mark, his brother, Juan, and his sisters, Elaina and Margarita. Surviving are his loving children, Marie and her husband Mike, Joseph and his wife Ruth, Anayda, James and his wife Teresa, Michael and his wife Janet, Julie and her husband Phil and Claire, his 16 grandchildren and his sisters Argentina and Norma and his brothers in law Manolo and Felipe.
