Helen Schenk

Helen Schenk, 88, of Hazlet, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on the morning of January 1, 2022. Helen was born in Detroit, MI to Fredrick and Olive (Brittan) Hilgendorf.

She met the love of her life, Robert, stationed at an army base near Detroit, when her family invited a few soldiers from the military to Thanksgiving dinner. They were married 6 months later and moved to New Jersey after his discharge, settling in Union City and eventually buying a home and raising their family in Hazlet. Helen left us early New Year’s Day for a long awaited dance with Robert who predeceased her sixteen years earlier after 52 years of marriage. Her first, her last, her everything.

She was also predeceased by her parents, her sister Ruth Doyle, sister-in-law Betty Ann (Sal) Bellotti, and son-in-law Edmunds Tobiens.

Left to cherish her memory are sons Robert (Jayne) Schenk Jr., Steven (Connie Demko) Schenk, and daughters Susan Tobiens and Carol (Chris) Heller. Her loving grandchildren Jessica (Joseph) Eastman, Jenna Schenk, Jacqueline (Carsten) Raab, Jonathan (Joy) Schenk, Christopher and Eddie Tobiens, Danielle, Steven, Alyson and Patrick Schenk, Katie, Grace and Abigail Heller, and great grandchildren Jackson, Julian, Dante and Julianna. Also, her loving sister-in-law Margaret (Robert) Sjosward, many loving nieces and nephews, and best life long friends Janet and Pat.

All services are private due to COVID with a memorial planned for a later date.
