Grace E. White

December 9, 1927 ~ August 21, 2021 (age 93)

White, Grace Elizabeth, 93 passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 21, 2021. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on December 9, 1927, the eldest child of Honora and Thomas White.  She graduated with her R.N. from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Brooklyn, where she was described as “capable”, “always laughing”, “lovable” and “able to sleep through the loudest alarm clock”.  These characteristics carried on through much of her life.  Her early glamorous career would include stints as the Nurse at NBC at Rockefeller Center, and Paramount Pictures.  She later moved on to a long career with the City of New York, going for her B.S. and Masters from St. Francis College at night, and her Nursing Home Administrators license.  At the City she held a myriad of positions, including Nursing Home Inspector where her surprise middle of the night inspection led to the investigation of Willowbrook and its subsequent closure.  She moved on to Analyst and Contract evaluation before her retirement.

Grace was an avid and adventurous traveler, first with her young daughter Liz, and later with  Liz and her husband Franz, who also adored her.  In later years, she lived at Eastpointe in Highlands, where she greatly enjoyed the area’s social scene.

Grace is survived by her only child, Liz von Ziegesar, her sister, Eleanor ‘Bunky’ Dunkelman, and is predeceased by their younger brother Joey, who was killed in Vietnam.  She was also the proud Aunt to Tom, Neal, Paul and Joanne, and their collective 8 children, Cara, Grant, Sean, Jack, Michael, Drew, Luke and Elli.  She will be missed.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 26, 2021 from 2-5 PM with a prayer service at 4:30 PM at the John E. Day Funeral Home 85 Riverside Ave. Red Bank, N.J.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Sea Bright Library and Cultural Arts Center.
