Chapin Family,
My family had the honor of meeting your father several times and spending time with him at Honor Day. I will never forget the year that an endless line of Marines and Sailors were lining up to speak to him and thank him for his service. Once they found out he was at Pointe du Hoc - it was game on! He shared so many stories. My four boys now know how to get a white uniform clean when covered in mud because of him (30 min story). The best part about him telling the story for the circle of wide eyed Marines was how he seemed to glance over a few of the "smaller" details. A few he casually mentioned - his uniform got dirty from scaling the bluff at Pointe du Hoc, they lost a few boats getting to the cliffs, he scaled over 100 vertical feet while taking direct, calculated fire, etc etc. He did manage to focus and elaborate for about 15 mins on how they removed there uniforms and scaled up the bluff in underwear. Cant make it up! We are so sorry for your loss and America has lost one of its greatest patriots on earth.
