RUTH MCGINNIS, 98, of OCEAN TOWNSHIP, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 20, 2017, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, NJ. Ruthie’s amazingly contagious smile was her trademark and her unwavering love of family, her legacy. She was born and raised in Paterson, NJ where she graduated from St. Joseph’s High School and met the love of her life and husband of 55 years, Joe McGinnis. Ruth and Joe married in 1945 after Joe’s return from his service as an officer in the U.S. Navy during WWII. They settled in Allenhurst, NJ where they lived for 26 years before moving to Ocean in 1976. In addition to raising her seven children, Ruth was an active partner in Joe’s self-employed businesses and a life long communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Deal.

Ruth was predeceased by her devoted husband, Joseph, in 2000; grandson, Eric Pelly; parents, Rose and Anthony Thomas; sister Gloria White and brother Robert Thomas and son-in-law Garry Penta. She is survived by her five daughters and two sons: Maureen Penta, Ocean and Long Branch; Joseph A., Jr. and his wife, Pat, Oakhurst; Marcy, New York and Ocean Grove; Laurie and her husband, David Pelly, Ottawa, Canada; Mark McGinnis and Shanna Kahler, Marlton, NJ; Janet Forino and Joe Mercadante, Long Branch; Susan McGinnis and her husband, Paul Gallagher, Lorton, VA. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Michelle Shrewsbury, Jackie (Alex) Barba, Rosemary (Bill) Rodman, Brian and Kevin McGinnis, Elizabeth and Christine Forino and Ellen, Joe and Dan Gallagher; three great granddaughters: Sydney and Isabella Barba and Emma Rodman; daughter-in-law Patty McGinnis, son-in-law Joseph Forino, and many nieces, nephews and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ayalik Fund, in memory of her grandson, Eric www.ayalikfund.ca or in care of John E. Day Funeral Home. Visitation will be at John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave, Red Bank, NJ, from 4-8 pm on Friday, February 24, and a Mass of Christian burial will be on Saturday, February 25 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 46 Richmond Ave, Deal, with interment at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport, immediate following.
