Richard was my summer next door neighbor in Manasquan all my growing up years college years and a few after until dad sold property in early 90.s. He was always apart of our group of 13. There was a saying some of "us" would say " if you can't walk Hoppenstedt". I am glad he is now with his beloved Gale and hopefully he's in complete peace. God rest your soul dear "old" friend.

Richard was a core member of our gang at the North End in Manasquan for more summers that I can count growing up. He will be sorely missed.
He was indeed a "Mr Fix-it"; he built my first stereo for me from a Heathkit do it yourself kit; I had that until very recently! Built my car stereo system in my BMW 2002.
He, our friend Bob Hohenstein and I all had the 2002: Blue, Green, Red respectively. We would wash them together, Team NJ BMW!
Memories of him playing chess w our friend Tom Williamson on the beach
He was a loved member of our gang.
Love you Richard, peace to you. You will be in our hearts always.
Jack

Richard and I were friends during the early 60's in elementary school at Frank Antonides School in West Long Branch. We were both Cub Scouts together in Pack 145; one year his mother was our Den Mother. We spent many afternoons over a chess board but also wandering around the fields and woods then between Fulton Avenue and Wall Street, picking Indian corn in late autumn, and riding bicycles up and down in the sand pits behind his house. All these places have long since been paved over into developments but the memories still remain. Sadly we drifted apart during and after high school but we met again at our 2009 class reunion. May he now rest well in a place of light, in a place of green pasture, in a place of refreshment, from where pain, sorrow, and sighing have fled away; and may his memory be eternal.

First my grandparents then my parents rented the cottage at the shore from Richard's grandparents and parents. So I have great memories of Summer's spent at Manasquan with Richard (1950s, 60s, 70s). There was quite a group of us. We would hang out in his bedroom and listen to records (military stuff - The Halls of Montezuma, etc.), and read the latest super hero comics. Richard and my brother were very big comic collectors. As the guys got older in the afternoon and early evening you would always find Richard, Chip, Tommy, and Jack hanging around a chess board waiting to play the winner. They were good years and Richard will always live in my memories of the great times spent at Manasquan Beach. -- Lisa

I knew Richard in high school. He was a smart and good-hearted guy. I'm so sorry that he had to struggle with ALS. I hope he had some happiness along the way.
