Welcome to the memorial page for

John E. Schlapkohl

September 28, 1935 ~ September 21, 2017 (age 81) 81 Years Old

John "Captain John" Schlapkohl of Sugar Island, MI passed away peacefully at home on September 21, 2017. John will be dearly missed by his loving wife Beatrice Schlapkohl (nee Mayer), his daughters Julieta Booz (Donald), Margarita Monleon, Maria Huffman (James), and his son Walter Schlapkohl, and five grandchildren. John will also be missed immensely by his twin sister Lucy Rounds (Peter). John was pre-deceased by his first wife, Emily, and his parents, Walter and Josephine Schlapkohl.
John was born in Staten Island, NY and grew up in Brooklyn. He earned a bachelor of science in chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. He served in the Navy from 1957 - 1963 and settled in Atlantic Highlands, NJ with his first wife Emily. During that time he worked as a chemist at DuPont in Sayreville, had four children, earned a masters degree in Business Administration from Seton Hall University, and served on the Henry Hudson Regional School Board from 1972 - 1977. His first wife Emily died in 1982 and that same year John moved to Flint, MI where he worked as Senior Chemist for DuPont. In Flint, John met Beatrice who would become his second wife and Captain John's steady and trusted "first mate". Although John and Bea retired to Sugar Island in 2006, John did not sit still. When not enjoying the view from his sweet Sugar Island home, Captain John wrote poetry, lectured on maritime history, and traveled as often as he could.
A wake will be held on September 29 from 7-9 pm at John E. Day Funeral Home in Red Bank; a funeral mass will be celebrated on September 30 at 10:00 am at St. James Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Middletown.
