Bernard T. Deverin

March 22, 1925 ~ May 29, 2014 (age 89) 89 Years Old
Bernard T. Deverin, 89, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at home in Fair Haven.  He was born and raised in Perth Amboy to the late John and Ann Deverin.  He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High school and Rider College, where he played basketball and football  and was the Rider football team’s MVP as a running back his senior year. He also played on a Perth Amboy junior level basketball team in 1948-49 called the “Lucy 5” (named for a fallen friend in WWII) which won a national title.

He proudly served his country in the US Navy during both World War II and the Korean War.  Bernard worked for Hess Oil for 46 years and retired as Senior Executive Vice President of Amerada Hess Corporation and President of Hess Trading.  He served on the Board of Directors of Amerada Hess Corporation and Merit Oil Company.  He also served on the Board of Governors of Navesink Country Club, Metuchen Country Club, and the Jupiter Hills Country Club.   He was an all around athlete and sports fan, who loved golf, running and swimming, and loved watching Notre Dame Football, the NY Yankees, and the NY Jets.

He is predeceased by his 8 siblings, and his son; Gerry Deverin in 2013.  Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, Claire Deverin; his sons, Bernie and his wife Midge, Sean and his wife Michele; his daughters, Charlene and her husband Robin Kirtley, Eileen and her husband Harry Radovich, and daughter in law, Lori Deverin.  Also surviving are his 16 loving grandchildren; Margaux, James, Walter, Grace, Sean, Macauley, Conor, Hugh, Tori, Harry, Kendall, Hayden, Peter, Peter, Ryan, and Kathleen.

Visitation will be held at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ on Monday, June 2, 2014 from 6-8:30 PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. James RC Church on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 10 AM.  Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Middletown.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to the NJ Chapter American Parkinson Disease Association, P.O Box 2026, Edison NJ 08818.  Please visit Bernard’s memorial website available at www.johnedayfuneralhome.com.
